An In-Depth Analysis of Stainless Steel Pipe Degreasing Methods and Key Points

Date:2025-09-22
Stainless steel pipes are widely used in industrial production due to their corrosion resistance and high strength. However, during use, stainless steel pipes inevitably become contaminated with oil, dirt, and even rust. These impurities not only affect the pipe's efficiency but can also adversely affect subsequent processes. Therefore, degreasing stainless steel pipes is particularly important. So, what methods should be used to degrease stainless steel pipes?

First, Alkaline Washing Degreasing
Principle and Operation: Alkaline washing utilizes a saponification reaction between hydroxide ions in an alkaline solution and fatty acid ions in oils and fats, removing oil contaminants from the surface of the stainless steel pipe. To do this, soak the stainless steel pipe in a prepared alkaline solution for 15-20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with clean water.
Key Points and Precautions:
- The alkaline solution concentration should be appropriate; excessive concentrations may corrode the stainless steel pipe surface.
- The soaking time should be strictly controlled to avoid over-degreasing, which may result in surface roughness.
- Protective equipment must be worn during this operation to prevent the alkaline solution from splashing into the eyes or skin.

Second, Acid Degreasing
Principle and Operation: Acid degreasing utilizes the hydrogen ions in an acidic solution to react with the alkaline components in grease to produce a water-soluble substance, thereby achieving degreasing. Soak the stainless steel pipe in the acidic solution for 10-15 minutes, then rinse with clean water.
Key Points and Precautions:
- Acidic solutions are also corrosive, so the concentration and soaking time must be precisely controlled.
- After pickling, rinse with clean water immediately to prevent residual acid from causing secondary corrosion to the stainless steel pipe.
- Maintain good ventilation during the pickling process to avoid the accumulation of harmful gases.

Third, Solvent Degreasing
Principle and Operation: Solvent degreasing utilizes the grease-dissolving ability of organic solvents to quickly dissolve and remove grease from the surface of stainless steel pipes. Soak the stainless steel pipe in the organic solvent for 5-10 minutes, then rinse with clean water.
Key Points and Precautions:
- Organic solvents are volatile and toxic. Wear protective equipment when handling these products, and operate in a well-ventilated environment. After degreasing, any residual solvent in the stainless steel pipe should be thoroughly removed to prevent it from affecting subsequent use.

Fourth: Hot Water Degreasing Method
Principle and Operation: Hot water degreasing utilizes the physical action of high-temperature hot water to soften and dissolve grease, then removes it from the surface of the stainless steel pipe through a stream of water. Soak the stainless steel pipe in hot water for 10-15 minutes, then rinse with clean water.
Key Points and Precautions:
- The hot water temperature must be properly controlled to avoid excessive temperatures that could cause deformation or damage to the stainless steel pipe.
- After degreasing, promptly inspect the stainless steel pipe surface for any residual grease. A second degreasing process may be performed if necessary.
