benefit of material to systems application
the use of carbon steel pipe on water conveying systems has been a very common practice all over the world for over 100 years, and is still the most common material choice for this application. carbon steel pipe is globally available in a wide range of grades, sizes, wall thicknesses, lengths, and can also be provided pre-insulated. carbon steel pipe is economically priced compared to other non-ferrous materials, resulting in lower material costs and requires no special handling.
it can be used in any building utilizing chilled water systems and is accepted as a material for piping systems in all mechanical codes. carbon steel pipe has high tensile strength and internal pressure ratings, making it useful in high rise buildings as well as low rise buildings such as schools, hospitals, and office complexes.
the only situations in which carbon steel is not a preferred material would be systems with potentially corrosive, acidic water or when long-term durability is desired and there is concern that current water treatment levels may not be maintained.
