Pipe Spool

The pipe spool is an innovative method of constructing piping systems. It consists of prefabricated components that are joined together. This method is used by many industries to set up complex piping systems. The use of pipe spools is becoming increasingly common.

Bestar Steel has been providing custom pipe welding and pipe spool fabrication solutions since 1993.

Components of a Pipe Spool

Pipes: Each pipe spool consists of multiple pipes. They act as significant support structures and transport liquids, glass, etc.
Elbow and tees: Both of these are vital components. They are used to change the direction of pipes. If a straight pipe needs to turn 90 degrees to the right, for example, these elbows and tees are useful.
Reducers: These are used when merging two pipes. They change the diameter of pipes and ensure the necessary liquid flow is maintained.
Couplers and crosses: Couplers connect the ends of two pipes. If a longer pipe spool is required, couplers connect the pipes. Crosses offer multiple branching points in the system, spreading the pipes in different directions.
Flanges: These are flat, circular plates that join pipe spools to other spools. They provide a reliable method of connecting and disconnecting sections of the piping system.
Valves and hangers: They are used in almost every house. They are used to start, stop or reduce fluid flow speed. Apart from this, hangers are also used in pipe spools. These structural elements stabilise and support the piping system.

All these components can be joined together according to need. The advantage of the pipe spool is that the components are attached in a controlled environment. Once ready, the spool is transported to the workplace for installation.

Process of pipe spool fabrication
Fabrication is a complex process. It requires multiple steps to complete. First, the pipe components are welded and assembled. The following steps are involved:
Design and engineering.
Cutting and bending.
Assembly and welding.
Inspection and testing.
Surface treatment for corrosion resistance.
All of these steps are vital for successful fabrication. Engineers use two primary methods to make pipe spools. These are as follows:
Spool roll fitting and welding. This method uses a rolling machine. It rotates the pipe. This makes it easier for workers to weld the pipes from different positions. This method ensures safe and reliable pipe spooling.
Spool Position Fitting and Welding: This method of pipe spool fabrication involves minimal machine involvement. Workers must move around the pipe to perform the fitting and welding processes. It is important to note that this process is time-consuming and tiring for the workers.
Almost all pipe spools rust over time. They are not immune to it. Therefore, the manufacturer applies a coat of paint or epoxy resin. This coating ensures the pipes are resistant to rust, corrosion and moisture.

Pipe Spooling Applications

Water plants that supply different areas also use this method.
Power stations also use this method of piping to transport other fluids.
Oil, gas and petrochemical plants usually use pipe spooling. Almost all offshore companies use this method. This helps them to install piping systems quickly.
Pipe spools are also used in air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Large buildings usually require more space for on-site line and pipe setup. Therefore, pipe spooling is a suitable solution.
All construction work in cities utilises pipe spooling. This helps constructors to arrange large spaces for piping. Ready-made pipes make their lives easier.
Pipe spooling has also proven effective in marine and mining work. However, this work requires a robust and durable piping system. This is because it does not degrade over time due to moisture. This is thanks to the excellent rust-resistant coating.
